Montrose, the seat of Montrose County, is
situated on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains and is home to the Black Canyon National Park. It is in a region where elevations vary between 5,200 to 14,000 ft within a 30-mile span. It is served by US Highways 50 and 550, about 270 miles from Denver.
The town of Montrose was founded in 1882, shortly after the Ute Indians left the Uncompahgre Valley. The founder, Joseph Selig, was reminded of the beautiful lake country of Scotland and named the new town after Sir Walter Scott's "Legend of Montrose." Early Montrose was a cow town, frontier freight center and hub of the various San Juan Mountain mining camps.

Montrose residents also enjoy one of the few remaining active drive-in movie theatres in America, the Montrose County Fair, "Little Britches" and regional rodeos, visiting circuses, carnivals, a farmer's market and much more. Two annual hot air balloon festivals are also highlights.

The area also hosts monthly SASS and USPSA shooting matches and recreational shooting. There are expansive hunting areas offering trophy elk, wild turkeys, antelope, deer and wild fowl.
Hidden within canyons 2,000 feet deep to high mountain landscapes at over 10,000 feet, lakes and rivers throughout the region yield yellow perch, largemouth bass, Kokanee salmon and blue ribbon trout fishing. Black Canyon Golf Course and The Links at Cobble Creek both feature 18 holes for golfing.
